DFW Elite Golf League is ending its second season, and we've been doing a lot of thinking about where we started, what we've accomplished, and where we want to go. We've enjoyed bringing golfers together from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but we've also realized that we have an opportunity to make a greater impact in our community.
When we started DEGL, our primary goal was to create a welcoming environment where people could play golf regularly, meet other golfers, and enjoy the game without feeling intimidated. That remains an important part of who we are. However, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we want to put more emphasis on fundraising, providing resources to people who need them, and removing some of the barriers that prevent people from enjoying golf.
We're making several changes as we prepare for 2027, and we want everyone to understand what we're doing, why we're doing it, and how they can help.
What We've Learned in Our First Two Seasons
One of the most encouraging developments in 2026 has been the growth and changing makeup of our golf community. We welcomed many more men to our outings this season, and our participation is now fairly evenly divided between men and women. We're pleased to see that DEGL is becoming the co-ed golf community we envisioned, with golfers of different backgrounds and skill levels enjoying the game together.
We've also learned that DEGL can make a difference beyond our regularly scheduled play days. Our October 31 No Tricks, All Treats Golf Gear Giveaway at Tierra Verde Golf Club in Arlington was a perfect example.
When our volunteers arrived at 8:30 a.m. to prepare for the 10 a.m. event, at least 50 people were already waiting. Approximately 300 people attended, and we distributed more than 100 golf clubs, 50 pairs of golf shoes, over 1,000 golf balls, golf bags, rangefinders, golf cart speakers, push carts, apparel, and other equipment. By the time the event ended, we had given away everything.
One thing we hadn't anticipated was the number of people asking for children's golf equipment. We had only one junior golf bag available, and the requests made it clear that we need to do more to help children get started in golf. That experience reinforced our decision to place greater emphasis on equipment access, instruction, and other resources for people who might otherwise find golf too expensive to pursue.
What's Changing and Why
As we prepare for our third season, we're making some changes to how DEGL operates. Our goal is to make participation easier, encourage greater community involvement, and direct more of our efforts toward our nonprofit mission.
Here are some of the changes:
-
We're eliminating membership fees. Rather than charging people simply to belong to DEGL, we're asking members to support our mission by volunteering at least five hours annually or making a donation of $100 or more. We believe this gives people a choice in how they contribute while helping us accomplish more as an organization.
-
Golf outings will remain open to everyone, whether or not they become members. You don't need to join DEGL to come out and play with us.
-
We're working toward a more consistent golf schedule, including a regular home course and opportunities to play at other courses throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
-
We're expanding our fundraising efforts to support free golf instruction, equipment giveaways, and other community programs.
-
We're recruiting a new Board of Directors and additional volunteers to help with fundraising, finances, events, youth programs, communications, and other organizational needs.
These changes reflect a shift in how we want to use our time and resources. We still want to organize enjoyable golf outings, but we also want to raise the money and develop the partnerships necessary to provide meaningful opportunities for people who need assistance getting into the game.
Golf can be expensive. Between equipment, lessons, practice facilities, and green fees, the cost can discourage people before they ever get started. We can't eliminate every expense associated with golf, but we can work to remove some of those barriers.
What We Have Planned for 2027
We're looking forward to a busy and exciting third season. Along with our regular golf outings, we're planning several activities that combine recreation, fundraising, and community service.
We plan to kick off the 2027 season with a golf getaway. It will be an opportunity for golfers to enjoy some time away, play golf, and spend time together before our regular season gets underway. We'll share more details as plans are finalized.
We're also developing a major fundraising event that we believe avid golfers will especially enjoy. This won't be your typical golf fundraiser. We're planning something fun, challenging, and a little different, with the goal of bringing golfers together for an entertaining experience while raising money to support our programs. We're keeping the details under wraps for now, but we're looking forward to sharing more.
Two of our biggest priorities are a free golf clinic for adults and a free summer golf camp for children. We want adults who have been interested in golf but haven't had the opportunity to learn to be able to receive basic instruction without worrying about the cost. For children, we want to provide an introduction to the game in an encouraging environment where they can learn the fundamentals and develop an interest in playing.
And yes, we're planning another golf equipment giveaway! The response to our first giveaway demonstrated just how valuable these events can be. We'll continue collecting new and gently used equipment throughout the year, with a particular emphasis on junior golf equipment.
All of these activities will require planning, volunteers, financial support, and community partnerships. Some details are still being worked out, and we'll announce dates and registration information as each event is confirmed.
How You Can Help
We have some ambitious plans, and we know we can't accomplish them without help. One of our priorities for 2027 is building a stronger network of members, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and community partners who share our interest in making golf more accessible.
If you enjoy golf and want to support our efforts, consider becoming a member. There are no membership fees, and you can fulfill your membership commitment through volunteer service or a qualifying donation. We have opportunities for people with all kinds of skills, whether you enjoy organizing events, working with children, fundraising, handling administrative tasks, or helping behind the scenes.
We're also looking for individuals interested in serving on our Board of Directors. As we expand our programs, we need people who can help us make sound decisions, develop partnerships, manage resources, and keep the organization moving in the right direction.
Financial donations and sponsorships will be especially important as we work to offer free instruction and other community programs. Businesses and individuals can also support us by donating golf equipment, helping us secure facilities, providing instructional services, or contributing goods and services for our fundraising activities.
And if you simply enjoy playing golf, keep coming out! Invite your friends, introduce someone new to DEGL, and help us continue growing our golf community. You don't have to become a member to participate in our outings.
Thank You for Helping Us Get This Far
We want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported DFW Elite Golf League during our first two seasons. Whether you've played in our outings, donated equipment, volunteered your time, contributed financially, helped organize an event, or encouraged others to get involved, we appreciate you.
We also want to recognize the businesses and organizations that have supported our efforts, including Ebony Greens, Sassy Caddy, and Tierra Verde Golf Club, along with the individuals who contributed equipment and helped make our first giveaway successful. Their generosity helped us put golf equipment into the hands of hundreds of people, and we're grateful for their support.
We're proud of what we've accomplished so far, but we know there's much more we can do. Our plans for 2027 reflect what we've learned during our first two seasons and our desire to make DEGL an organization that not only brings golfers together but also helps more people experience the game.
We hope you'll continue playing with us, supporting our programs, and helping us reach more people throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth community.
DFW Elite Golf League is entering its next chapter, and we'd love for you to be part of it.
You can play with us!
