Tee It Up, Style It Out: How Golf Fashion Is Evolving
DFW Elite Golf League Blog

There’s been a quiet revolution happening on golf courses across the country—and no, we’re not talking about scorecards or swing coaches. We’re talking fashion. What used to be buttoned-up and borderline bland has become one of the most exciting parts of the game.

From athletic dresses to coordinated sets, sleek sneakers to colorful gloves, golfers today are showing up with both confidence and personality. And women? We’re leading the charge.

The Modern Golfer's Uniform: Comfort, Movement, and Style

Back in the day, the golf “uniform” left very little room for creativity—think collared polos, long shorts or trousers, and shoes that felt like hiking boots. Now? Players are showing up in gear that moves with them, expresses their individuality, and still respects the game.

Here’s what we’re seeing more of—and what’s widely accepted at most public courses and progressive clubs:

• Golf Dresses & Rompers:
These aren’t your grandma’s dresses. We’re talking moisture-wicking, built-in shorts, and silhouettes that flatter without restricting movement. Some are sleeveless, some have zip collars, and others are totally collar-free. And yes, they look just as good at brunch as they do on the back nine.

• Crop Tops & Athletic Tanks:
As long as it’s not too revealing, many courses now allow collarless sleeveless tops and fitted tanks. Crop tops with high-waisted skorts or pants are everywhere, especially in warmer weather. And if you’re playing at a course that gives side-eye to a crop, throw a lightweight jacket or vest over it—problem solved.

• Leggings, Joggers, and Skorts:
Tailored joggers and golf-specific leggings are no longer taboo. Women are pairing them with polos, mock necks, and sleeveless tops. And skorts? Always a yes. Whether it’s pleated, athletic, or wrap-style, skorts have become a staple for movement and style. We’ve even seen biker shorts paired with oversized polos or half-zips—it’s giving “sporty chic” and we love it.

• Outerwear & Layers:
Zip-up vests, cropped pullovers, and even hoodie-style tops (yes, hoodies!) are gaining popularity, especially in cooler temps. Golf brands are leaning into athleisure, making pieces you can wear on and off the course. No more looking like you're headed to a finance job just to tee off.

Shoes That Actually Feel Good
Hard spikes? Out. Spikeless and hybrid shoes? In. Modern golf shoes are now designed with sneaker comfort and golf course grip. Some players even wear waterproof running shoes or trail shoes if they’re playing casually.

Brands are making cute, breathable golf shoes in colors beyond white or black. Think pastel tones, camo prints, metallic finishes, and even shoes that match your outfit on purpose. (Imagine that.)

Accessories That Show Personality
It’s the little things that really tell your style story:

• Gloves: No longer just white leather. Women are rocking gloves in neon, leopard print, florals, camo, pinks, greens, metallics, and even patriotic themes. Some switch out gloves just to match their outfit.

• Hats & Visors: The DEGL hat collection says it all—caps are part of the uniform now. Visors, bucket hats, wide brims, and even satin-lined turbans are showing up on the course.

• Jewelry: While some prefer to keep it simple, others play in hoop earrings, layered necklaces, or a full wrist of beaded bracelets. If it doesn’t get in the way of your swing, go for it.

• Socks: The quiet flex. Printed socks, tie-dye, stripes, or even mismatched on purpose—golfers are getting playful with their sock game. And yes, this inspired our Golden Sock award at DEGL.

What About Dress Codes?
It’s true—some private or traditional courses still have stricter standards, like requiring collars or banning certain lengths. But most public and municipal courses, especially here in DFW, are relaxing those rules. When in doubt, check the course’s website or call ahead.

Still, the overall shift is clear: golf fashion has caught up to the rest of the world. It’s performance-meets-style-meets-expression. And most importantly, it reflects the players—not just the history books.

Denim Seems to Still Be a No-No
While golf style is definitely loosening up, there’s one fabric that still raises eyebrows on most courses: denim. Jeans, denim shorts, and even denim skirts are usually considered off-limits, even at laid-back public courses. It’s not just about tradition—denim isn’t breathable, doesn’t stretch, and can tear up carts and seats over time. So as much as we love a good pair of jeans, save them for post-round.

The DFW Elite Golf League Take
At DFW Elite Golf League, we say: come as you are. Dress like yourself. Be respectful of the course—but don’t dull your shine for tradition’s sake. Whether you're out here in a flowy golf dress, joggers and a crop, or your signature neon glove, you belong.

Because at the end of the day, we’re not here to police style. We’re here to play, grow, and enjoy the game—in comfort and confidence.
